This is one airline that could never be considered stuffy. The airlines' parent company, Virgin Records, is in the Pop Music business and it is easy to see why the word "trendy" comes to mind when flying Virgin Atlantic. The whole Upper Class experience is about comfort presented in a slick, unstructured, style-conscious way obviously geared to making today's trendsetters feel right at home.
I enjoy checking in extra early for a Virgin Atlantic Upper Class flight from London Heathrow just to spend time in the Virgin "Club." No rules here...eat at the "Club" buffet before take off if you like, listen to the latest CDs in the Music room, have your shoes polished, a haircut and your nails done all before heading out to the gate. All the standard business gear, like power ports and fax machines, are available, if you can resist the urge to play. You can even have a back massage before you board. But, not to worry, if you don't have time for it all at the "Club," you can request an onboard massage during your flight... Cool!
Once onboard, Upper Class starts to resemble a pub-crawl and a health spa. Don't feel you have to stay in your seat on an Upper Class flight! The Bar, complete with bar stools and a bar maid that could have come directly from "the East enders", is open as soon as the seat belt sign goes off. After a massage or manicure, belly up to the Upper Class Bar before or after dinner or for that matter anytime at all. With Virgin's "Freedom" menu, you can snack or request a full course meal at virtually anytime during your flight... Very Cool!

In-flight fare is eclectic with hearty portions. Entrée's included Pan-seared Salmon, an enormous braised lamb shank or a "Savory Cheesecake" of Cheddar, Parmesan and cream cheese on a wheat biscuit base served with roasted fennel, yellow squash and a pimento sauce. The Cream of sweet potato soup was beyond good and the Cranberry Apple Crisp served with a portion of Pecan nut ice cream put me over the top!
The Upper Class wine cellar has a nice variety from California and France. It also included some trendy selections from Chile and South Africa.
Onboard entertainment is phenomenal. Along with all kinds of video games, there are great audio selections, as you can imagine, featuring all the latest pop, rock and jazz. There is even a classical channel for us not so "with it" flyers. Videos are numerous and if the continuous programming on your private screen isn't enough, you can ask for an individual DVD player and take a gander at the in-flight DVD film library...Way Cool!
